Beck Scores Hat Trick in Loss to JCU

Mount Union senior Thomas Beck had his second career hat trick, but the men’s soccer team saw its win streak stopped at two games with a 6-3 Ohio Athletic Conference loss Tuesday at John Carroll.

It was the second career hat trick for Beck, who has scored seven goals in the Purple Raiders last three games.  His first career hat trick was also against John Carroll in a 3-3 OAC Tournament game tie in 2010 which the Blue Streaks advanced 5-4 on penalty kicks.

The Purple Raiders fall to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the OAC while the Blue Streaks, 10-2 overall, stay in first place in the OAC at 4-0.

John Carroll got on the board first as Brian Potocnik scored in the 9th minute but the Raiders answered just over 90 seconds later as Beck scored to tie the game at 1-1.

Potocnik got the lead back for John Carroll with another goal in the 24th minute and the Blue Streaks would tack on scores in the 30th and 41st minute to lead 4-1 at the break.

Beck tallied his second goal of the game in the 59th minute to bring the score to 4-2.

John Carroll extended the lead to 5-2 with a goal in the 63rd minute before Beck scored his third of the night on a penalty kick in the 80th minute.

The Blue Streaks tacked on a score in the final minute for the 6-3 final.

Mount Union returns home Saturday to host Capital in an OAC match at 3:30 pm at Mount Union Stadium.
