Thoughts on MLS Week 3

Hat Trick for Le Toux powers the Union to their first victory.

Hat trick for Le Toux powers the Union to their first victory.

Philadelphia Union forward Sebastien Le Toux was the star of Week 3.  His hat trick led the Union to a 3-2 victory over D.C. United.  The Union looked to have more life in front of the home crowd and their “Sons of Ben” supporters’ group.

United is struggling at the moment, but it is a long season.  Expect to see improvement soon as Curt Onalfo clearly knows what he is doing.  He is a strong tactician and was loved by his players in Kansas City.

Another new coach, Carlos de los Cobos, saw his team go down in defeat as the San Jose Earthquakes beat the Chicago Fire by a 2-1 margin.  Keeper Jon Busch did not see action for the Quakes, even though we would have loved to see him in goal against his former club. He sure would have had some motivation.

Simply put the Crew were robbed in a 2-2 draw with FC Dallas.  Enough said. At least the result came against a team owned by the Hunt family.

Kansas City moved into first in the East with another victory, defeating the Colorado Rapids 1-0.  The Wizards may just be the real deal. We called them “a sleeper” before the season; they have had one heck of a start.  Kamara, Jewsbury, Arnaud, and Wolff look to be on their way to solid seasons.

Edson Buddle was again a legimate Player of the Week candidate, scoring two goals in the Galaxy’s 2-0 win over the Dynamo. We sure hope he keeps this up. Consistency has been an issue for him in the past, but this is a new season and a fresh start.  Good luck Edson!

RSL snuck out a 2-2 draw against Seattle with a late equalizer. Both clubs looked like true playoff contenders.  Seattle has a good mix of veterans and youth, while RSL’s Javier Morales looks like a star in the making.

Zack Schilawski helped the Revolution rout Toronto by a 4-1 margin. Schilawski became just the third rookie in history to come away with a hat trick.  New England always find a way to win and they always find talent for their roster.  We will have to keep an eye on the rookie to see if this will be a trend.

What a start to the season! This could be a banner year for the league.  Why not? We have a new CBA and it is a World Cup year.  There are all kinds of rumors regarding international talent headed to MLS later this season.  We couldn’t ask for anything more.
