Your Source for the Beautiful Game

The beautiful game is called many things: football, soccer, calcio, association football, and fútbol. Why is it beautiful? It has an abundance of potential. Soccer has stopped a civil war in the Ivory Coast, brought families together across the world, and cultivated the interest of millions. You can play with almost anything; the game is good inside or out. You don't have to be a millionaire to appreciate the game, a game with its own culture and jargon. The soccer community itself welcomes everyone, whether you are a dedicated fan of fifty years or a casual fan of fifty minutes.

It is known as the world's most popular game; more people play soccer than any other sport. The FIFA World Cup™ is bigger than the Super Bowl, even bigger than the Olympics. People enjoy the beautiful game in every country on the planet. Children dream of fame and success in this wonderful game from the streets of Africa to the wealthy academies of Europe. This "soccer dream" has now spread to the United States and Canada, where its homegrown talent is now a factor in the world's game.

We are dedicated to the game of international soccer; our simple goal is to promote the game. We started with a vision of being a source of news for the North American game with a focus on the emerging leagues in the U.S. The demand for professional coverage has allowed us to push into the European game as well. We announced an expansion of content in June, bringing English football into the mix.

We remain committed to Major League Soccer (MLS), the United Soccer Leagues (USL), Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), the National Indoor Soccer League (NISL), the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro), the U.S. National Team, and the Canadian National Team. New correspondents will allow us to cover the game in more detail and in more places. We strive to become your only source of soccer news!

Many were saddened by the news of a struggling, possibly defunct Xtreme Soccer League (XSL). Bad news for the international game was also found in the demise of Setanta Sports and the stories of astronomical debt in European clubs. A little bad news is not an issue for this tremendous game, where hope and prosperity are always present.

Don't forget to visit our coverage of local soccer tournaments such as the AC Milan Continental Cup, NOSO Cup, Put-in-Bay Cup, and the 2009 3v3 Worldwide Tour.

One year before the 2010 World Cup championship match in Johannesburg, Outside the Lines will examine South Africa, and what hosting earth's largest single-sport spectacle will mean to the country just 15 years removed from authoritarian apartheid rule. Bob Ley reports from Johannesburg and Cape Town, where he interviews South African leaders, including International Olympic Committee member Sam Ramsamy -- who was forced into exile for his role in leading the 1970 boycott of South African sports teams -- and national sports icon Lucas Radebe, who scored for the South African national team in the 2002 World Cup. The piece will also feature a first-person account of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, during which young students, many in their school uniforms, demonstrated against forced education in the language of Afrikaans. They were fired upon by police, and at least two dozen were killed, sparking days of unrest in an event credited with beginning the movement to end apartheid.
