Another Win for Mount Union Women

OBERLIN, OH - September 8, 2012 - The Mount Union women's soccer team defeated Oberlin on Saturday night, 3-0, for their second straight win.

Neither team could generate much offense in the first half. Mount Union took three shots, two of which were on goal and saved, while Oberlin took two shots and one on goal that was saved by Raider keeper Maria Favorite (Chesterland/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin). Mount Union entered halftime in a scoreless tie for the third time in four matches.

For the majority of the first 15 minutes of the second half, the game continued with its defensive theme. Mount Union took three shots in the first 10 minutes of the half but could not punch home a goal.

But in the 60th minute, the Raiders came through when senior Kylee Kolesar (Mentor/Mentor) broke away from the Oberlin defense and scored a goal from the right side to give her team a 1-0 advantage. For Kolesar, it was her first goal of the year.

The Raiders wasted very little time to net all-important insurance goals. In the 70th minute, sophomore midfielder Gina Wall (Warren/Howland) scored her first goal of the season to put Mount Union up 2-0. In the 76th minute, freshman Kolbie Haines (Hudson/Hudson) scored her first collegiate goal to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead and put Oberlin away.

MU Women Dominate Hiram

HIRAM, OH - September 7, 2012 - The Mount Union women's soccer team picked up its second win of the season on Friday night, defeating Hiram on the road, 4-2.

The Purple Raiders got on the board first thanks to a tremendous effort by senior Jackie Lowdermilk (Wadsworth/Wadsworth), who scored her first goal of the season by sneaking a shot into the net after colliding with Hiram goalkeeper Kailie Reed.  Lowdermilk's goal was the first time the Raiders scored in the first half this season.  The games against Denison and Kenyon last weekend both went into halftime with a scoreless tie.

Sophomore midfielder Ashley Sams (Alliance/St. Thomas Aquinas) then gave Mount Union a two-goal lead, connecting from long distance for her fourth career goal and first of 2012.

The Raiders held its 2-0 lead heading into halftime.  But as the second half began, so too did the inclement weather.  Mount Union and Hiram sat through a lightning delay that lasted nearly two hours before the two teams took the field again.

When play resumed, Shannon Evans (Newbury/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin), who was named Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday, scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to extend the Mount Union lead to 3-0.

With just over 20 minutes to play, Hiram cut into the Mount Union lead.  Senior Breann Mason took a free kick for the Terriers and rifled a shot past the outstretched arms of Raider goalie Maria Favorite (Chesterland/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin), who posted 16 saves last weekend.

But the Raiders got the goal right back just moments later.  Sophomore defender Jessica Finkler (Brunswick/Holy Name) carried the ball down the right side of the field and crossed the ball in front of the goal, where fellow sophomore Amanda Tamerlano (North Royalton/North Royalton) headed the ball past Reed to make it a 4-1 match.  The header was the first collegiate goal for Tamerlano, who is the fifth different Raider to score in 2012.

The feisty Terriers would not go down without a fight, however.  With just under four minutes to go, Mason sent yet another Hiram free kick into the net to cut the Mount Union lead to two (4-2).

Hiram failed to score again, though, and the Raiders (2-1) picked up its second win of the season.  Hiram, which has now allowed at least three goals in three of its first four games this year, fell to 1-3 with the loss.  The Terriers are 0-2 against OAC teams this year; they lost to Otterbein 3-0 on Sept. 5.

Mount Union plays Oberlin tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Oberlin, Ohio.  Tomorrow night's match is the final leg of a four-game road trip to open the 2012 campaign.  The Raiders' home opener is on Wednesday night (Sept. 12) against Penn State-Behrend.

Mount Women Fall to Kenyon

GAMBIER, OH - September 2, 2012 - For the second straight game, Mount Union played its opponent to a scoreless tie heading into halftime.

But unlike Saturday afternoon against Denison, the Purple Raiders were unable to walk away with a win over Kenyon.

Kenyon came out firing in the second half, scoring two goals in the first 15 minutes. The Ladies were able to extend its lead to three goals in the 81st minute thanks to a goal by Alice Bell.

Late in the match, however, the Mount Union offense came to life. In the 89th minute, rookie Shannon Evans (Newbury/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin), who scored the game-winning goal on Saturday in Granville, netted a goal on a breakaway. Then, just 29 seconds later, Evans broke free again and pulled the Raiders within one at 3-2. For Evans, the two goals were her second and third of the season.

Mount Union could not post the equalizer after Evans' second goal with 35 seconds remaining, though. The 3-2 loss was the Raiders' first of the season (1-1). Kenyon improved to 1-1.

Kenyon outshot the Raiders 29-5 and took 10 more corner kicks than Mount Union (11-1). Mount Union's sophomore goalie Maria Favorite (Chesterland/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) made nine saves in the loss.

The Raiders are off until Friday (Sept. 7) when they head to Hiram for a 4 p.m. match.

Historic Win for MU Women

GRANVILLE, OH - September 1, 2012 - Mount Union entered the 2012 season having never beaten Denison in a women's soccer match.

That all changed on Saturday afternoon.

The Big Red held an 11-0-2 advantage over Mount Union in the all-time series entering the day and looked poised to continue its winning over the Purple Raiders in the game's early goings. Denison mounted numerous scoring threats in the first half, outshooting the Raiders 11-0.

Mount Union's defense held strong throughout the half however, and sophomore goalkeeper Maria Favorite (Chesterland/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) posted three saves. After 45 minutes of play, the Raiders and Big Red were scoreless.

In the second half, Denison continued its aggressive play and finally broke through in the 48th minute. Big Red senior Sarah Livingston crossed a ball from the right into the box, where Jocelyn Festle was able to push a shot from point-blank range past Favorite.

Denison held its 1-0 advantage for just over 10 minutes.

In the 58th minute, the Mount Union offense finally came through. Freshman Kolbie Haines (Hudson/Hudson) found an opening in the Big Red defense and controlled the ball in the left corner of the field. She then took the ball toward the goal line and crossed the ball about five yards in front of the net. The ball found the foot of sophomore Nicole Moldovan (Cortland/Lakeview), who punched the ball into the lower-right corner of the goal past Denison keeper Andrea Karl. The goal, which came on the first Raider shot of the afternoon, marked Mount Union's first of the season and leveled the match.

The next 20 minutes were evenly played by the Raiders and Big Red. Denison was able to get off two shots in the 70th and 78th minutes but could not score.

After Favorite thwarted Denison's scoring attempt in the 78th minute, the Raiders put together a counter attack. When Favorite kicked the ball out of danger, sophomore Gina Wall (Warren/Howland) headed the ball up the right sideline and into the Denison half of the field. The Big Red defense was able to corral the ball and play it back to the keeper Karl.

Karl attempted to clear the ball upfield but misplayed the ball to Mount Union freshman Shannon Evans (Newbury/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin). Evans then rifled a shot from the right side of the box into the lower left portion of the net to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead. For Evans, it was the first of her young career.

Denison put two shots on goal (four total) in the final 12 minutes of the match but Mount Union fought off the Big Red attack to secure the win.

The win over Denison (0-1) was the first in Mount Union (1-0) school history. The Big Red defeated the Raiders 6-0 in the two school's last meeting (2008).

Favorite posted seven saves in the victory. Mount Union took just two shots the entire match but both found the back of the net. Denison outshot the Raiders 21-2 for the afternoon.

Mount Union will have little time to celebrate the win, however. The Raiders take the field tomorrow afternoon in Gambier, Ohio, against Kenyon. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
