Ohio Vortex Unveiled
CANTON, OH - The Ohio Vortex, the newest member of the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL), will make its home field debut on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at the Metroplex Sports Center, 18909 S Miles Road, Cleveland, OH 44128.
The Ohio Vortex expansion team will play in the PASL Eastern Division with the Louisville Lightning, 1790 Cincinnati Express, Detroit Waza, and the St. Louis Illusion. Their Western Division counterparts include the Stockton Cougars, Denver Dynamite, Texas Outlaws, and the San Diego Sockers. The PASL is a FIFRA (Federation International Futbol Rapido Association) member affiliated with the Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League and Liga Mexicana de Futbol Rapido.
The Metroplex Sports Center will host the Vortex until the Canton Civic Center is ready for action on January 2nd and become home to the team. Scheduled home dates at the Metroplex are December 5th, 12th, and 19th. Canton Civic Center home dates are January 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 15th, and 16th, 2010. Training will be held at the Pinnacle Sports Complex in Akron, Ohio.
The Ohio Vortex is a unique business model in the world of professional sports. As conceived by CEO Nick Bogdan, the Vortex will operate as a non-profit venture with 80% to 90% of all gate revenue going to charity and corporate sponsorships covering the operating expenses. Bogdan, a former goalie with the Canton Invaders and currently an executive with a national insurance company, recognizes the need to give back to the community. “In our current economic climate, everyone is scrambling to make ends meet, especially charitable organizations that rely on the generosity of others to survive. This team venture will partner corporate sponsorship with charitable agencies through family entertainment and give back a little something to everyone. Corporate sponsorship of the Vortex will enhance the company’s brand, reputation, and image. Charities can tailor game nights to meet fund-raising needs, and families can enjoy an affordable, quality sports event while supporting their favorite charity awareness campaigns. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.”
Leading the Ohio Vortex will be Head Coach Denzil Antonio. A graduate of the University of Akron, Antonio played professionally for 15 years and was the 1990-1991 NPSL Defender of the Year for the Canton Invaders. His coaching experience includes 9 years in the professional leagues and over a decade of developing and mentoring promising youth players at the premier level. Coach Antonio also will establish developmental programs for youth recreational and premier level players under the franchise logo.
