Tournament Loss Ends Season for MU Women

Fifth seeded Mount Union ended its season with a 1-0 loss at fourth seeded Otterbein in the first round of Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament Tuesday at Clements Field.

Neither team was able to generate any goals in the first 45 minutes of action, as Otterbein outshot Mount Union 9-4.

It wasn’t until the 77th minute off a corner kick, that Madison Burchfield would head the ball into the net off a corner kick, to give Otterbein the 1-0 victory.

In goal for the Purple Raiders, junior Maria Favorite faced only two shots on goal, while Otterbein’s Dana Strimbu faced three shots on goal.

Mount Union’s season ends with a 12-6-2 record as the 12 victories are a school single-season record while Favorite matched the school single season shutout record with 10.

Otterbein (12-6-1) advances to the semifinal round of the OAC Tournament against top-seeded Capital Thursday at 2 pm in Columbus.

MU Women’s Soccer Draws Against Heidelberg in Regular Season Finale

The Mount Union women’s soccer team ended Saturday afternoon’s game with a 1-1 draw against Heidelberg in its Ohio Athletic Conference regular season finale.

Prior to the start of the match, the team honored their two seniors, Sarah Tubbesing and Janey Fulk.

The Purple Raiders are now 12-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the OAC, while Heidelberg is now 3-14-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the conference.

The Berg’s Bethany Maltern struck first to put Heidelberg up 1-0 in the ninth minute and the lone goal would hold for the remainder of the first half.

In the 86th minute, Kolbie Haines would tie the game at 1 off a penalty kick to force overtime.

Mount Union’s defense held Heidelberg to only three shots the entire match.

Mount Union awaits their seeding in the OAC Tournament, but will play in the first round on Tuesday, November 5.

MU Women’s Soccer Sets New Win Record With Shutout at Baldwin Wallace

Mount Union’s women’s soccer team set a new school record for wins in a season with a 1-0 shutout of Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference match Wednesday in Berea.

Kelsey Malenic’s goal led the Purple Raiders (12-5-1, 5-3 OAC) to the victory.

Baldwin Wallace falls to 13-5 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

After a scoreless first half, Malenic collected a rebound off a shot from sophomore Shannon Evans in the 76th minute.

Junior keeper Maria Favorite  earned her 10th shutout, tying the record set in 1996 by Kara Callahan.

Mount Union concludes regular season play Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3:30 pm against Heidelberg at Mount Union Stadium. Prior to the start of the game, the team will honor its seniors.

MU Women’s Soccer Handed Double Overtime Loss at Otterbein Saturday

Sophomore Shannon Evans’ late goal was not enough, as the women’s soccer team fell to Otterbein 2-1 in double overtime in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday.

The Purple Raiders fall to 11-5-1 overall and 4-3 in the OAC while Otterbein improves to 10-5-1 overall and 5-2.

Jillian Strimbu would put Otterbein on the board first in the 69th minute before Evans would tie the game in the 89th minute on a corner kick from freshman Carolyn Balzano, which would push the game into overtime.

It would be Madison Burchfield that would give Otterbein the win over the Raiders at the 106.47 mark in double overtime, 2-1.

Mount Union next plays Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 pm against Baldwin Wallace in an OAC matchup in Berea.

MU Women’s Soccer Team Hooks the Fighting Muskies 4-0

The Mount Union women’s soccer team snapped a two-game skid as they defeated Muskingum 4-0 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday at Mount Union Stadium.

The Purple Raiders improve to 11-4-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the OAC while the Fighting Muskies fall to 8-6-2 overall and 1-5-0.

Sophomore Shannon Evans started the scoring when she put the Raiders on the board first in the sixth minute of play as she took a pass from Jessica Finkler. Gina Wall would score again for Mount Union in the 20th minute, as the Raiders would take a 2-0 lead into the half.

Junior Nicole Moldovan netted the ball off a pass from Kelsey Malenic in the 52nd minute to make it a 3-0 lead. It would be sophomore Megan Werner that would net her first goal of the season in the 72nd minute as the Raiders would go on to a 4-0 win.

The defense held the Fighting Muskies to only five shots, as junior keeper Maria Favorite recorded her ninth shutout.

Mount Union next plays Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 pm against Otterbein in an OAC matchup in Westerville.
